In my research, I combine theoretical and doctrinal approaches with empirical work, primarily qualitative, though I also have quantitative experience. I investigate pressing research questions in bioethics (with specific focus on ethics at end-of-life) and health law through interdisciplinary analysis, applying my legal and philosophical expertise. My work also aims to offer practical implications and policy recommendations for healthcare professionals regarding ethical and professional problems.
In forthcoming years, I plan to focus on four main research areas: end-of-life care, dementia, compassion, and normative ethics. I will continue researching end-of-life care, focusing on informal caregivers and medical decision-making by elderly patients, especially those with multi-morbidity and dementia, examining social, ethical, clinical, and policy implications.
I plan three major research projects. First, I will explore healthcare providers' views on end-of-life care, examining the state's and professional organizations' regulatory roles, providers' responses to patient death, and the relationship between compassionate care and such responses. This research will contribute to understanding the concept of "good death" and its institutional, professional, and cultural limitations.
Second, I will focus on dementia care ethics through my leadership in an international research initiative. This involves mapping perceived ethical dilemmas, conducting systematic reviews, assessing caregiver needs, editing a book on advance directives, and developing methods to enhance ethical decision-making in dementia care.
Third, I will write a book on compassion at end-of-life, examining how emotions influence normative decision-making in ethics and law. Using three case studies, the book will analyze compassion's role in triggering and affecting normative decisions.
Theoretically, I aim to develop a theory explaining the connection between clinical disease development and ethical expression—currently missing from existing ethical theories. I will continue publishing on professional ethics, particularly nursing ethics, while supervising students and collaborating on new research projects.
